A headshot has one job: somebody who has only seen the photograph should recognise you when you walk in. A family session has a different one, and it is rarely achieved by asking four people to stand still and look pleased about it.
Both are planned the same way. Decide what the photographs are for before the day, work with the light at either end of it, and leave enough room in the session for the frames that arrive in the gaps rather than during the posed attempts.
For a profile, a bio page or a whole team photographed to one consistent look. Solid mid-tone clothing, and a decision made beforehand about whether the photograph should read conservative or approachable.
How to prepare for a headshot
Planned around the youngest person's sleep rather than the calendar, and shot in the low light at either end of the day. Short bursts, movement and breaks, because that is where the photographs worth keeping tend to arrive.
How to prepare for a family session
Usually photographed outdoors in the last weeks, on your own or with a partner and older children. Timing is worth booking early, since the useful window is short and the light is the part that cannot be rescheduled.
On campus on the day, around the ceremony rather than instead of it, with the family group photographed while everyone is still in one place.
We agree the time, the place and what the photographs are for. Book a haircut a week or two out rather than the morning of, and pick one colour palette for a group so nobody photographs as an outlier.
A warm-up first, then the structured frames, then the loose part where people stop performing. Bring a second change of clothing, and snacks if there are small children in the group.
Settle delivery timing and what you are licensed to do with the files before you pay. For a headshot going on a company website or a recruiter's profile, licensing matters more than most people expect, and it is far easier to agree at quote stage than after the invoice.
